They occur while she is growing in her mother's womb. Female reproductive organs include the vagina , ovaries, uterus, and cervix. A baby starts to develop its reproductive organs between weeks 4 and 5 of pregnancy. This continues until the 20th week of pregnancy. The development is a complex process.
My daughter has had a fused vagina since she was born. The pediatrician prescribed a topical hormonal medication which opens it up, but every time we stop medication it closes again. We have never heard of this happening to any other girls. The doctor says that by the time she reaches puberty, her own hormones will fix the problem.
Back to Health A to Z. Labial fusion, or labial adhesion, is when the small inner lips around the entrance to the vagina become sealed together. In some cases, this can completely seal the vaginal opening, leaving a very small gap at the front that pee passes through.
Labial adhesions occur when the labia inner lips stick together. This type of adhesion happens most commonly in girls who are between 3 months to 6 years of age, and can persist until puberty. The diagnosis is made by looking at the vulvar area and observing that the vaginal opening is either partially or fully covered by the labia with a white line indicating the adhesion. If your child is having symptoms such as pain, particularly when she is in a straddle position for example, while sitting on a riding toy , or having trouble passing urine, you may have discovered that her labia appears to be stuck together. If your child has not had any symptoms, her health care provider may have noted the adhesions during a routine well-child check.
